Services and Applications (S&A) - When you optimize your OS this is where you
set them. |
When you optimize your Operating
System you want to use the least amount of memory for the Operating System as
possible. The more memory you have for your programs to run on or in the faster
the program will respond turning off unneeded or unnecessary background programs
(which is what they are) will increase the available memory for your programs.
Some steps in the optimization process may cause you computer to BSOD (Blue
Screen Of Death) or stop responding so you have to use care
when disabling these programs, normally if I don't know what the program does
and the description is too cryptic I set the program to manual start, if on
restart the computer crashes then I know that the program is required. If it
starts normally I look at the program to see if it was started by another
program, sometimes this will happen even though in the "Dependencies" page of
the properties for the program the bottom block for "The following system
components depend on this..." is blank. Then I set it back to "Automatic" for
the startup type.

Services are programs that are installed
to run in the background with out intervention or interaction by the user. From
the right window if you right click on the service you can control the
service. You can stop, start, restart, disable, or set the way the service will
start.
This is the Extended view of the S&A, if you use this view [the default view] in the
right window where you see the 'Select an item to view...' when you select the
service a description will display what the service does.

This is the Standard view of the Services and
Applications, it takes up less space, for those with limited
viewing area this is a better choice. You select this view by the tab at the
bottom of the manager. You can sort the view by clicking on one of the column
headers, such as Name, Description, Status, and so on. One thing that you should
do for security is to change the Log On, as you can see by the graphic I need to
change the ASP.NET to Local Service from Network Service. Some hackers have
figured out how to spoof the Network Service account. Always something........

Properties of a service view. From this view you can change the Startup type,
stop, start or disable the service. It also gives a description of the service
and the actual path to the executable, this information is handy if you are
having a problem with the service and need to find the actual file or path for regedit. You can also find out what other services depend on this service or
what services it depends on to start. You can set the Recovery rate also. If the
service is having problems and is shutting down unexpectedly you can set the
recovery to restart the service. For some services that require an account to
start you can set the account and password in the Log On tab.

And one last thing, as with most [using this term loosely] Microsoft products
putting the mouse pointer in some white space, and pressing F1 will bring up
help.
